Perfect People - Who Me? - Bible Study Course

Perfect By Definition

In our culture, we know well that there are NO perfect people...or are there?

God believes there are!

In Genesis 17:1, "the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou...perfect."

What a tall order! It's one thing for Jesus to be perfect; He was sinless, as we all know. But when I look at my mistakes from day to day, I realize just how incredible a command this was.

Job 8:20 says, "Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man," yet Isaiah rightly says "we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6).

The facts seem to contradict and yet the command continues today...

  • We are repeatedly admonished to "walk worthy" of our calling in Him: Ephesians 4:1, Colossians 1:10, 1 Thessalonians 2:12, Revelation 3:4.
  • Matthew 5:48 tells us, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
  • Hebrews 6:1 again says, "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection..."

Perfection by Movement - Perfection by Growth

Take heart. God's definition of perfection differs greatly from ours! In fact, there are many times that pleasing God is much simpler than pleasing man...because God never changes.

So, what can it mean to be perfect to God? Notice, each of these passages involves movement and/or growth.

  • walk
  • go on
  • strive

Hebrews 6 gives us insight into how we can truly walk with God.

"Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment."

Essentially, you should not be living the same way--at the same commitment level--you were when you first received the baptism of water and Spirit. There should always be a reaching for more of God.

There is a perfection in constantly growing in God. And it is through this going on, this growing beyond the beginning doctrine of salvation that brings the joy, peace, and fulfillment of living for God!
